Elkhorn Creek Kayak Fishing Series Results; September 8

On Saturday, September 8, yak anglers came out in strong numbers to fish the last regular-season Saturday in the Canoe KY ECKFS. The cooler temperatures of late have been ideal for fishing, and this day was no exception with a high of 78 degrees. The clouds and chances of rain did not deter the faithful, nor did it turn into much of a problem as the day progressed.

The numbers show that all things came together and made for a great day of fishing, with a grand total of 228.25 inches caught by the top five competitors of the day.

Place Angler Total Inches Points Earned
1st AJ McWhorter 48.75″ 5
2nd TJ Strong 46.75″ 4
3rd Tim Dunham 45.5″ 2.5
3rd Adam Miles 45.5″ 2.5
5th Allen Faith 41.75″ 1

As we count down the remaining weeks to the series grand finale, the overall point standings as of this writing are as follows:

Angler Total Points
AJ McWhorter 42.5
TJ Strong 37
Matt Schaefer 21.5
Tim Dunham 16
Adam Miles 14.5
Allen Faith 14
John Walters 8
Tim Emberton 3
Bob Brown 2.5
Eric Engel 2
Tyson Peterson 2
Joe Maione 2

There are two dates remaining in the regular schedule of the series; September 16 and September 30. The year-end, grand finale for the series will take place Saturday, October 13.

We’re having a great time on the creek so if you can, come out and join us. For more details on the ECKFS go to http://canoeky.com or call Wes at 1-888-CANOEKY.

See you on the water!

When Fish Attack

I love to catch trout. I’ve only been fly fishing for three years, but trout quickly earned the top spot on my list when it comes to my most enjoyable catches.

Second only to trout, is the small mouth bass (especially on the fly). In many ways trout and smallies give similar fights, both fish being strong and aggressive. Both can be downright stubborn when it comes to coaxing them towards you, you have to wear them down enough to drag them in your direction.

A friend of mine posted this video in a YakAngler.com forum that I frequent. In the video, a diver happens upon some bedding bass and the reaction is pretty astounding. After seeing this I realize how much of a fighter the small mouth is, and why I owe no apologies for their being such a close second on my freshwater fishing list.

AJ McWhorter showing one of his larger catches of the evening

On Wednesday, August 15th there was a good turnout for the Canoe KY
ECKFS. With weather pretty much as expected for the middle of August and the water levels strong, the fishing turned out just as strong for this evening’s tournament.

There were a couple of ties, both for second and fifth place, really highlighting how tough the competitors are. Who would have expected the weekly totals to be so close?

The results are:

Angler Total Points earned
1st TJ Strong 33.25″ 5 pts.
2nd AJ McWhorter 27.75” 4 pts.
2nd Allen Faith 27.75” 3 pts.
4th Adam Miles 27.25” 2 pts.
5th Matt Schaefer 26.5” .5 pts.
5th Tim Dunham 26.5” .5 pts.

TJ Strong came in 1st this week with this catch putting him over the top.
