I ended up having a great evening on the creek last Friday. The water levels were good and the water itself was fresh, not stagnant as it occasionally gets towards the end of summer. There was the slightest telltale hint of that crisp autumn air that seems to re-energize after a few weeks of summer’s dog days. I caught a few bluegill on my fly rod and a little fatty of a spotted bass.

Some may say it wasn’t the most productive two hours on the water but then again, it depends on what you’re looking for. Dare I say the time I spend fishing isn’t always about catching fish? Don’t get me wrong, I love to catch fish! Some of my friends think I live to catch fish!  Don’t be fooled. Just about as often as not, for me at least, fishing is all about reflection.

Reflections of my childhood and of friends who have come and gone. People and events that have influenced me in ways I could never have imagined. Loved ones no longer with me and my wonderful memories of when they were.
Reminiscing good times, adventures, glory days, and dreams I once dreamed for my future. All of these things sometimes dance across my mind while I’m fishing.

The nostalgia and melancholy that can weigh me down seems to get a little lighter once I’ve been able to spend some time in quiet reflection on the water. No, fishing isn’t always about catching a fish. Sometimes it’s about catching peace of mind.
